2007 RAGTIME Festivals!
by Bryan Wright

In late May and early June 2007, I loaded up my Subaru Outback and hit the road to Peoria, Illinois for the 33rd annual World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest, then to St. Louis for Memorial Day at the Scott Joplin house, and finally over to Sedalia, Missouri for the annual Scott Joplin International Ragtime Festival. It was a wonderful two weeks filled with LOTS of ragtime music, and I enjoyed the chance to see many friends--some of whom I hadn't seen in several years. Here are some photos from my trip.

Brett Youens--presently from Germany--playing one of his rags on board the "Spirit of Peoria" during the riverboat cruise on Friday Morning (May 25, 2007)
15-year-olds Max Keenlyside (of PEI, Canada) and Adam Swanson on board the "Spirit of Peoria" during the riverboat cruise on Friday Morning (May 25, 2007)
Jim Radloff playing on board the "Spirit of Peoria" during the riverboat cruise on Friday Morning (May 25, 2007)
Bryan Wright (yours truly) on board the "Spirit of Peoria" during the riverboat cruise on Friday Morning (May 25, 2007) -- just about to launch into "Tiger Rag."
Max Keenlyside playing a mean "Chestnut Street In The 90s" on board the "Spirit of Peoria" during the riverboat cruise on Friday Morning (May 25, 2007)
Bryan Wright and Martin Spitznagel (of the Pittsburgh Spitznagels) duet in the Afterglow Party at the Hotel Pere Marquette in downtown Peoria after the New Rag Contest (May 25, 2007)
Eytan Uslan (just before winning the contest!) and Bryan Wright pose in front of the stage before the semi-finals on Sunday afternoon (May 27, 2007)
Watch where you point that viola case, Eytan! (May 27, 2007)
Eytan Uslan, Bryan Wright, and Adam Swanson outside the main ballroom where the contest is held in the Hotel Pere Marquette (May 27, 2007)
Bryan Wright in front of the Scott Joplin house in St. Louis, Missouri during the festivities on Memorial Day. Trebor Tichenor and the St. Louis Ragtimers performed out back behind the house later in the day! (May 28, 2007)
Martin Spitznagel, Adam Swanson, and Eytan Uslan outside the Scott Joplin house (May 28, 2007)
Eytan took that first picture--then he and I switched places so that I could be in a picture. Same place. (May 28, 2007)
A room in Scott Joplin's apartment on Delmar Street in St. Louis (May 28, 2007)
Adam Swanson and Martin Spitznagel (of the Pittsburgh Spitznagels... in case you forgot) in Scott Joplin's kitchen! What wouldn't you give to have sat at that table with Scott Joplin? (May 28, 2007)
Adam Swanson and Bryan Wright in Joplin's apartment. NO, that piano is not original to the apartment. Joplin never played this one. (May 28, 2007)
Martin Spitznagel, Bryan Wright, and Adam Swanson in the living room of Scott Joplin's St. Louis apartment (May 28, 2007)
Eytan Uslan--World Champion Old-Time Piano Player and darn good pianolist as well! Who knew a person could be so talented at both? (May 28, 2007)
Adam Swanson on the left trying to make his escape from camera-range behind the Scott Joplin house in St. Louis. That trailer stage is where Dave Majchrzak, Jim Radloff, and Trebor Tichenor and the St. Louis Ragtimers performed throughout the day to a decent audience of 50-100 people. See the famous St. Louis Arch in the background? (May 28, 2007)
Just one of many ragtime fans from out-of-town! (May 29, 2007)
Now to the Best Western in Sedalia, MO, where Martin Spitznagel (of the Pittsburgh Spitznagels) is warming up for the festival on the digital piano in the lobby (May 29, 2007)
Eytan Uslan doing a little late-afternoon practicing at the Gazebo (May 31, 2007)
Martin Spitznagel (of the Pittsburgh Spitznagels... you know how it goes) listens as Eytan practices (May 31, 2007)
The Friday morning (9:00 AM!) concert hour at the Katy Depot in Sedalia. I shared the program with Jeff Barnhart and Mas Ikemiya. Jeff is at the piano now. Great crowd! (June 1, 2007)
Martin Spitznagel (of the blah blah blahs...) plays for an enthusiastic crowd in the Stark Pavillion (June 1, 2007)
Another shot of Martin in the Stark Pavillion. He makes it look so, so easy! (June 1, 2007)
Martin's on a roll! Go, Martin, go! (June 1, 2007)
Martin's really whipping that little Samick piano now! (June 1, 2007)
From left to right: Eytan Uslan, Brett Youens, Bryan Wright, and Adam Swanson outside the Stark Pavillion in Sedalia (June 1, 2007)
The streets in Sedalia are lined with these things! (June 1, 2007)
Martin Spitznagel is playing Eubie Blake's "Rhapsody in Ragtime" at the Gazebo (June 1, 2007)
Way up there you can sort of see Bryan Wright playing on the stage of the Stark Pavillion. That's Mas Ikemiya in the bottom left hand corner leaning to laugh or chat with someone on the other side of his wife (in the flowery hat). Wonder what's going on? I see a lot of heads turned... guess I must be playing "Roberto Clemente." (June 1, 2007)
Now that "Roberto Clemente" is over, I'm introducing the next piece--something a little more fiery called "Nickel In The Slot" (by Zez Confrey). (June 1, 2007)
Yours truly (Bryan Wright) "in the zone" with "Nickel In The Slot" on the stage of the Stark Pavillion (June 1, 2007).
Bryan Wright and Martin Spitznagel on the stage of the Stark Pavillion playing a duet of Bryan's "Ticklish Tom--A Carolina Cakewalk." (June 1, 2007)

That's all the photos for this year. I had a great time in Peoria and Sedalia! Hope to be back next year!
